New record out today!!! Always exciting to release a new record and this one is no exception. Day in Pictures - Nightshades can be purchased from Clean Feed Records HERE. As a follow up to the eponymously titled first record, Nightshades digs deeper into the Day in Pictures esthetic and features wonderful playing from Nate Wooley, Kris Davis, Jason Ajemian, Tomas Fujiwara and myself. The band will be performing one night and one night only at Cornelia Street Cafe on February 19th. If you want to come to only one of my shows this year, this is the one! Call 212-989-9319 for reservations.

I've had a slew of tours and apperances with Iron & Wine recently playing baritone saxophone, flute and clarinet. Most notably you can see me play a solo with 6 stitches in my left hand (long story) on the Conan O'brien Show HERE. In other news, I'm playing two shows in the next week with my band Hearing Things here in Brooklyn. Check my Calendar for details. We'll be heading into the studio in August to hopefully put down at least 5 top ten hits (why not?). After that I'll be filling in on clarinet in the great nyc band Barbez in Portugal and visiting Sardenia with the Exploding Star Orchestra. My summer dance card is pretty full this year. Give thanks.

Spring is here. Or at least that's what it says on every chalkboard outside of every used clothing store in Brooklyn. Winter ended as Hearing Things finished up our March residency at Manhattan Inn. We had three magical Wednesday nights there with amazing friends and some super fun music. Can't wait to get the band into the studio and make something for you to hear! Speaking of recording; the new Day in Pictures is in the can and due out on Clean Feed Records in November. The tapes sound really good and I'm overjoyed to add it to the Day in Pictures library. In other news, I'm excited to be getting ready to hit the road with Iron & Wine in May. Look out for us on Jimmy Fallon on April 26th and at the Beacon theater on May 14h. Oh and I almost forgot, look out for Memorize the Sky at Firehouse 12 in New Haven on May 24th. Its rare that we get to play together and continue our 12 plus year run as a trio! Hope to see you around one of these sunny days.

Summer is over! I'm ecstatic! Kind of love the fall, makes me want to put on a backpack and study even though I haven't been in any kind of school in 11 years. It was a bit of a slow summer but I was glad to get in a few gigs with my new band Hearing Things. The band is really starting to dig into its identity. It's a great vessel for my many obsessions (old rock and roll, surf, strip tease and other demento styles). I bring this up because if you're reading this before September 19th 2012 you can come see us at Manhattan Inn in Brooklyn. Our gig there last month was a blast, really got into a tiki speakeasy vibe. Check the details HERE. Until then study hard and don't lose your trapperkeeper.

Super excited to debut my new band Hearing Things on June 6th at Union Pool! The project is a continuation of my fascination with 50's and 60's rock and roll fused with some worldly and other worldly influences. A lot of people ask me if I'm still leading a doo wop band and this new project is my answer (yes and no!). You can see all the details HERE.

Also on the union pool bill is Aram Shelton who I'll be playing with the next night at Ibeam. It's an awesome band of old Chicago friends with Jason Ajemian and Chad Taylor. Details HERE

Day in Pictures named Jazz Album of the Year by Magnet Magazine

July 19th, 2011

Its been a whirlwind couple of weeks. Just finished a couple of Saturday afternoon concerts with Day in Pictures featuring completely new lineups and mostly brand new material. It was a really rewarding experience to work on the same tunes at the same club with totally different bands. Barbes was a great spot to be the last two Saturday afternoons. Not many people took me up on the open to the public rehearsals but I still think its a potentially interesting idea for folks who are interested in the process, so hopefully I can try that again soon. In the middle of that, I had a performance on Late Night with David Letterman leading a horn section for the musical guest Gomez. It was a super fun experience to work with Gomez and the veteran horn section from Paul Shaffer's band. You can see the end result HERE.

A couple of fun gigs coming up in August. The return of Paper Gardens on August 15th (again at Barbes). I've been working on expansions to the piece so watch out for more Paper Gardens sightings in the coming year. Also Day in Pictures trio will be at Nublu on August 21st. I haven't played at Nublu yet but its a favorite Manhattan spot to hear some music and if you stay later you can get down and boogie to their brazilian dance parties. Stay Cool Y'all hope to see you this summer!

I've just returned from an extended tour with the Sam Robert's band. Super fun travels with an amazing band and great group of fellas. Meanwhile back in NYC I'm excited to be moving to south brooklyn in July and saying farewell to the ever dynamic Bushwick. To warm up my new digs I'll be performing two afternoon concerts in July at Barbes (Saturday July 9th and Saturday July 16th). The concerts will feature different quintet lineups and the new book of Day in Pictures tunes. Come by at 4pm if you're interested in our rehearsal process as we will run over the material in an open rehearsal. Or come just come at 5pm and check out the set. In late July I'm thrilled to be attending the Music OMI residency program. I'll spend three weeks in the countryside collaborating with musicians of diverse backgrounds and heritages and will be pushing the limits of how many hours I can practice in a day! Looking forward to the fall I'll be participating in a festival celebrating one of my teachers and mentors Anthony Braxton put on by the Tri Centric Foundation. I'll be performing in his Opera as well as his new small ensemble that will feature musicians and dancers (and I think the musicians will dance as well!). Ok that's about it for now, check the Calendar for specific dates and times and sign up for my mailing list to receive very occasional reminders about my band leader gigs. Thanks for reading!

Thank You to everyone who came out to Zebulon for the Day in Pictures CD Release show.
